An archeological dig in 2010 uncovered Bury St Edmunds Bronze Age origins. They also found Roman artefacts. The city was a royal borough in the Saxons and got its name as a consequence of it becoming the burial area of King Edmund The Martyr, who was killed with the Danes in 869.
